Finals for 2010/2011 Season

// February 28th, 2011 // No Comments » // Season 2010/2011

The weekend saw both the A’s and the B’s enter the first finals round.

Sharks A finished fourth on the ladder in the round games which put them up against Kookas A for the first round of finals. It was a hot day outside and a furnace inside the leisure centre at Byford on Sunday. The first period of the match saw three goals, two for Sharks and one for Kookas. Sharks’ first goal was scored by #37, Marko Villkman (no assist, 10mins23). The Kookas didn’t reply immediately, but late in the third period they converted, scored by K#6 Timothy Campbell, assisted by K#66 Roger Sallaenbach (16mins49). The Kookas goal was shortly followed by Sharks’ second goal scored by #37 Villkman, assisted by #20, Ville Penttinen at 18mins50.

In the second period Kookas levelled the scores at 26mins44, (goalscorer K#6 Campbell, no assist). Sharks didn’t take long to regain lead, with a goal from #7 Morgan Emms putting the score to 3-2 at 29mins36 (assist #24, Nic Yeoh). Sharks found the net not shortly thereafter at 29mins49 when #22, Matt Smith scored to take the lead to 4-2 (assist #6 Adrian Baster). Sharks player #37 Villkman was given a 2 minute bench penalty for Holding late in the second period, but to no avail for the Kookas; the Sharks held them out for the full two minutes! The second period ended with the adrenaline pumping and the air so thick it could be carved with a knife.

Suspense is the word to describe the third period. Kookas were giving it all that they had. A repeated offences call for Incorrect Push by K#25 Jason Keogh landed him a 2 minute bench penalty. Sharks maintained possession throughout their Powerplay but could not convert. At 49mins22 Kookas scored to bring the scores one closer, at 4-3 (goal K#78 Andrew Dombrier, assist #7 Angelo Tinelli). The Kookas were desperate for another goal and at 57mins12 they called a Time Out which was a good move, they had a free hit in front of goals 30 seconds later at which time Sharks called their own Time Out. A well calculated move by Coach Steve King bought Sharks a 30 second breather, much appreciated by the over-heated goalie, #91 Jacob Stanley. Kookas didn’t follow through with their free hit, K#25 put it metres wide of the goal, a clear miss. At 50 seconds left in the game #36, Matti Tuominen got a 2minute bench penalty for Incorrect Hit. The Kookas withdrew their goalkeeper in place for a sixth field player. It was 6-on-4, the Kookas were giving it every ounce of energy. In the last second of the game the whistle blew for another 2 minute bench penalty for the Kookas who had failed at scoring an equaliser goal. The final whistle blew. The Sharks had won: 2-1, 2-1, 0-1 = 4-3. Sharks A will move through to the Semi Final which will take place at Lords Recreation Centre on Sunday 13th March 2011.

Sharks B played Pirates White B in the elimination final on Sunday, also playing off the 3-vs-4 places. The Sharks Bs also came through with a win. The scoreline read 2-2, 1-2, 3-0 = 6-4. Goals in order:
6mins34 PW#8 Lukas Pfiefle, assist PW#85 Andrew Hayes (0-1)
7mins55 #12 Kade Ebeling, no assist (1-1)
14mins29 PW#75 Roland Safar, assist PW#19 Glen Bennet (1-2)
15mins22 #21 Tara Keogh, no assist (2-2)
28mins32 #21 Tara Keogh, assist #13 Ari Pekka (3-2)

Floorball is heating up

Revo Sharks A played Redbacks A and by god was it a nail-biter right down to the last seconds. The game started with a goal to the Sharks scored by #6, Adrian Baster (no assist, 4mins38). Sharks were doing well to keep control of the game with many scoring opportunities which were smothered by the Redbacks defence. With four minutes remaining on the clock Redbacks player #19 Timothy Boteler was given a 2min bench penalty for Playing Lying Down when he took a fall in the Sharks defence. The powerplay to follow was unsuccessful, except that another Redbacks player #5 was given a 2min bench penalty for playing without a stick (Matt Treloar, 17mins41). The powerplay neither scored nor conceded a goal and the remainder of the period was uneventful.

Period 2 started well when, at 2mins08 #38 Melvin Tng scored a rocket of a goal, assisted by Baster. It was an awesome goal followed by a well-deserved celebration and then a Match Penalty 1 because Melvin wasn’t on the Match Record. #25 Oli Diffen sat the 5 min bench penalty and Tng changed shirt, and with permission from the Redbacks, the Referees and Secreteriat he was allowed to return to the Sharks substitution bench for the remainder of the match. The 5 minute short-handed play really tested the Sharks defence. #4 Kris Collopy took several blocks and challenged the Redbacks on a few occasions. Overall it was a successful penalty-kill as the Redbacks didn’t score at all whilst Oli was on the bench. Sharks called a Time-Out to re-group and figure out some strategy to play successfully with one less man. The remaining 9 and a half minutes saw Sharks working very hard in defence, with two shots from Redbacks hitting the post but no goals conceded. The end of the second period was welcomed by all on the Sharks team.

The third period held us all on the edge of our seats, with many goal-scoring opportunities for both teams as Sharks were desperately trying to hold onto their lead and Redbacks were trying to get onto the scoreboard. Redbacks #8 Ashley Welke was given 2mins for Incorrect Push at 6mins08 but our powerplay was unable to convert to a goal. Redbacks called a Time-Out at 16mins45 and they must have taken some super-juice because when they came back on they scored two goals in quick succession: R#7 Anthony Boteler assisted by R#22 Keiran Erith, 12mins57; and, R#23 Justin Coleman assisted by R#44 Marcus O’Neill, 13mins45.

The scores were tied. Both teams were throwing themselves at every opportunity to get ahead. The Redbacks hit the post, Sharks made for a breakaway with the ball and Collopy scored a goal (no assist, 16mins08). Redbacks threw everything they had into trying to score a goal. In the last 3 minutes of the match the Sharks were awarded a delayed penalty for an illegal push by one of the Redbacks players. #91, Goalkeeper and Captain Jacob Stanley ran off the field, to put 6 of our players on as we maintained control of the ball. The Redbacks were pushing high up the court and forcing Sharks to use a back pass between defenders often, which almost resulted in an own goal. Sharks didn’t score in the delayed play and so R#5 Matt Teloar was given another 2 min bench penalty, this time for Incorrect Push with 2 minutes, 27 seconds remaining. No goals were scored during the powerplay and the Redbacks could not make it back to level scores despite their best efforts.

3-2 Win to Sharks (1-0, 1-0, 1-2)

A’s First Match of the Season

// October 12th, 2010 // No Comments » // Season 2010/2011

The Sharks A team started the season with a draw against Dingoes on the weekend. They were a little short for numbers with only two subs on the bench vs Dingoes’ seven.

The game started with a bang as Kris Collopy took a slide tackle/block into the boards in defence. Collopy was doing a great job in centre, blocking shots and feeding the ball up to the forwards, who at 17mins23 scored the first goal. (#7 Morgan Emms, assisted by #24 Nic Yeoh). Oli was also bringing out the blocks which held our defence nice and tight, not letting a goal through.

Our scoring came  earlier in the second period, when at 2mins13 #10, Don O’Brien scored assisted by #24 (Yeoh). The Dingoes took a while, but they got one back off a free hit from the corner, D#2, Dean Tweddle scored at 17mins30, assisted by D#51, Tom Reid. The Dingoes kept the heat up on our defence but didn’t manage to get through again.

The third period was one of action and suspense. Dingoes scored an equalising goal at 2mins04 (D#60 Tom Ferguson, assisted by D#39 Daniel Scott). It was neck-and-neck and the air was so thick you could slice it with a knife. Emms got into some heat with a couple of Dingoes on the boards and was sent off for Incorrect Push (2 mins). The Dingoes worked their Powerplay well and scored a third goal (9mins56 D#7 Peter Harris, assisted by D#51 Reid). Oli Diffen (#25) and Emms worked well in a break-away attack and scored a reciprocal goal at 12mins15 (#7 Emms, no assist). Collopy and Yeoh followed them up with a goal at 14mins07 which brought us into the lead with 4-3 (#24 Yeoh, assisted by #4 Collopy). But alas, the Dingoes managed to score another at 15mins53 (D#50 Dylan Watson, no assist). It was neck-and-neck until the last whistle as neither team could convert another goal opportunity.
